Library & History
Discover the centuries-long history of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.
Since the middle of the 19th century, Masonic historians have sought the movement’s origins in a series of ancient documents known as the Old Charges, dating from the Regius Poem in 1425 to the beginning of the 18th century. The Old Charges include rules and regulations for training operative stonemasons in the guilds of Medieval times.

M. and our charities. These leaders play an essential role in supporting our fraternity and its activities in communities throughout the state.

The journey of Freemasonry begins in the Blue Lodge, where members receive the first three Degrees in Masonry: Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft, and Master Mason. When a man becomes a Master Mason, he achieves the highest degree in the brotherhood. But he also gains access to the next chapter of his Masonic journey, one that includes many potential paths.
There are a number of wonderful appendant Masonic bodies that are available to Master Masons in Illinois and their families. The Grand Lodge of Illinois A. F. & A. M. is proud to be affiliated with the following organizations.
